It is important to note that certain food and beverages can get into your milk and bother your baby by making them gassy or fussy.

You should also be aware of other caffeine sources such as teas, sodas, chocolate, and over-the-counter medicines.

You should also know that alcohol can alter the taste of your breastmilk and may bother your baby. While mercury does not typically get into your breast milk in significant amounts, your body can still absorb this metal from fish. Small amounts of mercury cannot affect everyone, but it can be dangerous to infants and small children. It is best to avoid fish that are high in mercury such as swordfish, tilefish, shark, and king mackerel. You can still eat fish, but be sure to consume varieties with less mercury such as salmon, catfish, and canned light tuna.
